Founder – Bernard W. Norton
Bernard W. Norton (1862 - 1940) founded a small custom tool shop in 1901, three years after moving west from Connecticut. Within a few years, the Norton tool and die shop began making specialty automotive parts in order to provide a wider variety of products. The company grew to become a staple in California for the stamping and forming of steel products, expanding further to provide license plates and steel containers, in addition to its original product lines.

Specialty Manufacturing
Widens Product Line

During the early part of the Company there were numerous automobile start-ups in the West; the Company manufactured custom parts for many of them. After the outbreak of World War I the Company produced parts for the first gyrocopters and started a product line of metal street signs.
